History
Before joining Auschwitz trips from Kraków, it’s recommended to learn at least the basic information about the place. We will just sum it up - it’s nothing like the actual tour in the museum.
Initially Auschwitz was a concentration camp for Poles and the direct reason behind creating it was the lack of capacity in prisons due to mass arrests in Poland. The first prisoners reached the camp on 14th of June 1940. Since early 1942 it has become the largest extermination camp in history. Its inmates were mostly Jews, Romani, Polish political prisoners, as well as homosexual people. They were forced to do hard labour, kept in inhumane conditions, they were tortured, and eventually murdered. The whole area was isolated from the outside world and surrounded with barbed wire fencing, being constantly under close supervision of guards. To prevent any outside contact, there was an additional 40 sq. km buffer area patrolled by Nazi SS troops.
During the peak time in mid-1944, Auschwitz served as a prison for 135 thousand people. That was a quarter of all people held in the entire war camps system.
Finally, after almost 5 years of its existence, Auschwitz was liberated on 27 of January 1945. Before that, the Nazi killed or transported into central Germany most of the prisoners. Only 7000 people were freed.
It is worth mentioning that Auschwitz, due to its large size, was actually a group of the camps; Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II-Birkenau, Auschwitz III-Monowitz and 40 more sub-camps. Only the core part of this complex covered about 40 sq. km.
