History of the Wieliczka Salt Mine
The Salt Mine is located very close to Kraków in a small city of Wieliczka. The history of salt extraction in this place began almost 5000 years ago. Archaeological findings show that people were gathering and drying brine in the area. It was a simple process that let them use table salt. The mine itself started operating much later, and began to grow deeper at the end of the 12th century. Its nine levels go down to 327 meters (357 yards) and the total length of corridors exceeds 3 km (1.86 miles). Salt Mine Wieliczka was listed on the first UNESCO World Heritage List, making it an official treasure of the world - both natural and cultural.
